Screw Conveyor Manufacturing Material Selection
Considerations for making a Screw Conveyor (Auger Conveyor)
There are some considerations when designing or recommending a screw conveyor, at Bega we take into account some data provided by our clients:
-
The application of screw conveyor
-
The type of material to be handled (consistency, density, fluidity, size, corrosivity, texture, flammability, etc.)
-
Material loading volume
-
Projected frequency of use Processes that the conveyor must carry out (Temperature Exchanger or Pressing)
These details are very important in making decisions such as: screw conveyor construction materials, screw conveyor configuration, accessories, and power supply. (They can be powered by an electric motor or powered by adjacent machines). To best suit your needs, the screw conveyor needs to be customized in a number of ways. For example, sections or accessories can be added such as:
-
Washing units
-
Mobile base units
-
Flexible discharge hoses
-
Discharge hoppers
-
Access and inspection ports
-
Flexible discharge hoses
-
They can even make you portable screw conveyors.
Common Materials Available to Make a Helical Screw
Carbon Steel (A36) Screw Conveyors (Auger Conveyor)
Screw conveyors made of carbon steel are the most common, and are used for applications where the product or bulk material to be handled presents normal working conditions, there is no humidity, it is not corrosive, it is not abrasive, it is not for handling. Made of food grade materials, they do not degrade. That is, materials such as mineral powders, seeds.
This type of screw conveyors made entirely of carbon steel can have a final finish with an epoxy paint coating, food grade paint, also with high temperature resistant paint.
Carbon Steel A36
Type 304 Stainless Steel Screw Conveyors (Auger Conveyor)
Stainless Steel 304
Type 316 Stainless Steel Screw Conveyors (Auger Conveyor)
Screw Conveyors made of austenitic 316 Stainless Steel with better corrosion resistance properties than type 304. They are mainly used in applications for handling salts or highly corrosive products, for handling chemicals, paper pulps, and also for food handling.
One of its main properties is that they resist the attack of most chemical agents, atmospheric corrosion and other compounds better than type 304. The maximum service temperature: 880 ° C if it is in continuous service and 840 ° C in service intermittent.

Hardox 400-450-500 Screw Conveyors (Screw Auger)
Hardox 400 is an abrasion resistant steel with a nominal hardness of 400 HBW. It is a versatile steel resistant to moderate wear and tear.
Hardox 450 is a more popular abrasion resistant steel, exhibiting excellent structural properties. It is an abrasion resistant steel with a nominal hardness of 450 HBW. Provides resistance against indentations and abrasion, as well as a longer service life, making it even more cost effective.
Hardox 500 is a highly abrasion resistant, weldable, bendable steel with a nominal hardness of 500 HBW. Suitable for applications requiring very high resistance to wear.
Hardox® 500 increases load capacity and lengthens service life, while having good processability and strength properties.
However, before selecting Hardox as the manufacturing material for a screw conveyor, it is necessary that you contact one of our consultants, this is because although the bulk material that you are going to handle is moderately abrasive or highly abrasive, the Rotational speed of the screw conveyor and the configuration play an important role for the Hardox to lose its anti-wear properties under certain conditions, for which we will present alternatives such as anti-wear coatings on the propeller that in certain conditions could be more viable.
Special Materials to Manufacture a Screw Conveyor (Screw Auger)
Duplex 2205 Screw Conveyors
Screw conveyors made of Duplex 2205 steel (it is a nitrogen enhanced steel) are used to withstand the most severe corrosion. This was developed to combat the common corrosion problems that normally plague 300 series stainless. "Duplex" describes the family of stainless that is not completely austenitic like 304 and is also not ferric like 430. The 2205 framework contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. Commonly referred to as the "work horse" grade, 2205 is the most commonly used grade in the family of duplex steels.
The advantage of the structure of duplex grades is that it combines the favorable qualities of ferric steels (resistance to breakage caused by stress corrosion and better strength) and austenitic alloys (ease of manufacture and resistance to corrosion). Duplex 2205 application should be limited to temperatures below 600 ° F because exposure to elevated temperatures can embrittle the material.

Monel Steel Screw Conveyors
Monel is a trademark used as a prefix for different corrosion resistant metal alloys. It is produced by Special Metals Corporation. These alloys are made with a nickel base and show characteristics that include great resistance to atmospheric corrosion, saline water, and various acidic and alkaline solutions.
Alloys with identical chemical and mechanical properties produced by other manufacturers are available that are an excellent alternative to various Monel brand alloys. Corrosion resistant alloys are widely used in the marine industry, and the petroleum and chemical processing industry.

Hastelloy Screw Conveyors
Hastelloy is a registered trademark, and this name is used as a prefix for more than twenty different highly corrosion resistant alloys. It is produced by Haynes International, Inc. These super-alloys or high performance alloys developed by Haynes International, are made on a nickel base and show different characteristics including; great resistance to uniform attack, localized resistance to corrosion and oxidation, resistance to corrosion breakdown and ease of welding and fabrication.
There are other alloys with identical chemical and mechanical properties, made by other manufacturers, and are an excellent alternative to various Hastelloy brand alloys.
Corrosion resistant superalloys are widely used in chemical processes, aerospace, industrial gas turbines and the marine industry. In addition, due to its good performance, its use is increasing in the field of energy, health and environment, oil and gas, pharmaceutical industry, and desulfurization industries.
